His theology is fully expounded in his Summa Doctrinae de Foedere et Testamento Dei (1648), where he worked out what would eventually be considered a biblical-theological, redemptive-historical perspective for presenting covenant theology. This Cocceian procedure, known today as “biblical theology”, was set against the analytical doctrine-by-doctrine approach of his contemporaries in Holland—most famously, Voetius(Gisbertus Voetius, 1589-1676). For more than half a century, the biblical theology of Cocceius and the systematic theology of Voetius stirred controversy in the church of Holland, each side trying to prove the errors and illegitimacy of the other. As an exponent of federal theology he was tacitly influenced by his teachers in Bremen, Matthias Martinius and Ludwig Crocius. 17세기 네덜란드 신학계는 코케이우스파와 보에티우스파로. 나뉘어 논쟁하게 되었는데, 코케이우스파가 승리했다. 보에티우스(Gisbert Voetius, 1589-1676), 코케이우스(Johnnes Cocceius, 1603-1969) 독일 출신 코케이우스는 당시 일반화되어 있던 개혁 교회의 입장을 바꾸려고 노력했다. 성경을 전제 없이 주어진 상황과 문맥에서 이해해야 한다고 주장했다. 따라서 조직신학자들이 채택하는 용어를 기피하고, 오직 성경에서 나오는 용어만을 선택해야 한다고 주장했다. 그리고 엄격하게 성경적 해석을 고집했다. 그러나 지나치게 성경의 문맥화, 상황화는 문제를 일으켰다.(무리한 풍유적 해석, 성경을 지나치게 역사화해서 해석, 안식일의 문제 - p.282~283). 네델란드 대학에서 코케이우스파가 교수직을 대부분을 차지했다. 대체적으로 정통신학의 맥을 유지하고 있었지만, 세밀한 부분에서는 다른 점도 많았다. 코케이우스는 예정론을 별로 강조를 하지 않았다. 그리고 보에티우스파는 점차 약화되었고 침묵했다.

제믈러(Johann Salomo Semler, 1725-1791) 제믈러는 하나님의 말씀과 성경은 동일한 것이 아니며, 성경신학은 역사적 연구일 뿐이라고 주장했습니다. 제믈러는 성경과 하나님의 말씀을 분리시켰으며, 역사 비평신학의 아버지(역사-비평적 성서해석의 선구자)라는 칭호를 얻었습니다.
우리에게는 보스의 <성경신학>이 널리알려져 있고, 그의 후계인 체스터 레만의 <성경신학>이 널리알려졌습니다. 그런데 부흥과개혁사에서 토마스 슈라이더(Thomas R. Schreiner; 1954 - , 미국 침례파 신학자) , 찰스 스코비(Charles H. H. Scobie)의 저술을 번역해서 <성경신학>을 출판했습니다. 다른 제목인데 부흥과개혁사에서 <성경신학>으로 통일된 제목으로 출간했네요.
<성경신학> 분야에서 존 오웬의 저술이 가장 방대한 양을 갖고 있는 것으로 보입니다.
