XCI. Ques. How do the sacraments become effectual means of salvation?

Ans. The sacraments become effectual means of salvation, not from any virtue in them, or in him that doth administer them, but only by the blessing of Christ, and the working of his Spirit in them that by faith receive them.

 

제91문 : 성례는 어떻게 구원의 유효한 수단이 됩니까?

답 : 성례가 구원의 유효한 수단이 되는 것은 성례가 가지고 있는 어떤 효능이나 그것을 집례하는 사람 안에 있는 어떤 덕에서 오는 것이 아니라, 그리스도의 복에 의해 그리고 성례를 믿음으로 받는 사람들 속에서 역사하시는 성령의 사역에 의해서 유효하게 됩니다.

※ 인효론(人效論, ex opere operantis)과 사효론(事效論, ex opere operato), 은효론(恩效論, sola gratia)과 신효론(信效論, sola fide); Opposed to the sola fide is the doctrine of ex opere operato and the grace of Christ’s saving work.

 

Q. 1. How, negatively, are the sacraments not effectual means of salvation?

A. The sacraments, negatively--

1. Are not effectual means of salvation, by any virtue in themselves, to confer grace and salvation upon all the receivers, and by the work done, or bare receiving of them; for many may and do partake of the sacraments who are without true grace, and have no share in the salvation of the gospel. "And Simon himself was baptized. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee: thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter; for thy heart is not right in the sight of God; for I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity." --Acts 8:13,20,21, 23. "Whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord." --1Corinthians 11:27.

2. The sacraments are not effectual means of salvation through the intention of, or by any virtue in them that do administer them, there being no power in the most holy ministers themselves to give grace and to bring salvation unto any by their administration of the sacraments, or any other ordinance. "So, then, neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase." --1Corinthians 3:7.

2. 성례는 그것을 집례하는 자 안에 있는 어떠한 효능이나 의도에 의해 구원이 주입된다고 하는 의미에서 잘못된 것이다. 가장 거룩한 사역자라 할지라도 그들이 성례나 다른 어떤 법도를 집례함으로 말미암아 그들 자신 안에 있던 은혜가 주입된다거나 구원에 이를 만한 능력이 역사한다는 것은 아니다. “그런즉 심는 이나 물주는 이는 아무 것도 아니로되 오직 자라나게 하시는 하나님뿐이니라”(고전 3:7).

 

Q. 2. How, positively, are the sacraments effectual means of salvation?

A. The sacraments positively are effectual means of salvation--

1. By the blessing and presence of Christ, which do accompany the sacraments and other ordinances of his own institution. "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." --Matthew 18:20. "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." --Matthew 28:20

2. By the working of the Spirit (the effect and evidence of Christ's blessing and presence), whereby Christ doth put life, and virtue, and efficacy into his sacraments and ordinances, without which they would be wholly dead, and altogether ineffectual. "For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit." --1Corinthians 12:13.

⑴ 그리스도께서 세우신 성례와 다른 법도들에 대하여 그는 거기 임재하시고 그것들에 축복하셨다. “두 세 사람이 내 이름으로 모인 곳에는 나도 그들 중에 있느니라” (마 18:20), “내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라 볼지어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라”(마 28:20)

⑵ 그리스도께서 그의 성례와 법도들에 생명과 덕과 효능을 불어넣으며 그곳에 (그리스도께서 축복하시고 임재하셨다는 결과와 증거로써) 성령께서 역사하셨다. 그렇지 않았다면 이 모든 성례는 완전히 죽은 것이며 전적으로 무효한 것이 된다. ‘우리가 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유자나 다 한 성령으로 세례를 받아 한 몸이 되었고 또한 다 한 성령을 마시게 하셨느니라“(고전 12:13).

 

Q. 3. In whom doth the Spirit by the sacraments work effectually unto salvation?

A. The Spirit by the sacraments doth not work effectually unto the salvation of all that receive them, but of all that by faith receive them.
